Ospel has arisen due to the peat exploitation and originally has an agricultural core. It is situated on high sandy ground, like a peninsula sticking out into the vast Peel Marshes.

The parish was founded in 1866. The name Ospel would come from "Oxes Peel '(dialect Oosepieël), because the peat in the Peel were often carried by ox carts. The neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church, Our Lady Immaculate dates from 1866-1867 and was designed by the known Dutch architect PJH Cuypers.
